Biography
Belgian Conductor Roeland Henkens, based in Oslo, is one of Belgium's foremost young
conductors. He is increasingly in demand as a guest conductor in Scandinavia and Europe.
His expressiveness and versatility has given him a prominent reputation and instant rapport
with orchestras. Having held the position of Assistant Conductor with the Stavanger
Symphony Orchestra and the Norwegian Opera and Ballet, Roeland has successfully worked
within a wide range of repertoire and different genres.
He has conducted orchestras such as the Norwegian Opera & Ballet, the Netherlands Radio
Filharmonisch Orkest, Armenian State Symphony Orchestra, Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra, Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble Allegria, the Chamber Orchestra of Minsk,
Ataneres Ensemble and the Barratt Due Academy Orchestra in Oslo.
Roeland has a master’s degree from the Norwegian Academy of Music, studying under Ole
Kristian Ruud and is an alumni of the elite conducting program Dirigentforum, part of
Dirigentløftet from Talent Norway and Sparebankstiftelsen DNB. His mentors were James
Gaffigan, Ed Gardner, Hannu Lintu, Eivind Gullberg Jensen, Jorma Panula, Johannes Schlaefli, Nicolas Pasquet amongst others.
As an instrumentalist, he won first prize and the musicality award at the Concours
International de Musique de Chambre de Lyon with the Brass Quintet Eburon. He was the
winner of the Trumpet Category in the distinguished Aeolus International Competition for
Wind Instruments in Germany and was a recipient of the ‘Belgian Cultural Prize’ by the City of Beringen.
